Amber is not a stone, but fossilized resin of coniferous trees. It is a very old mineral substance and Amber talismans have been found in Stone Age archaeological deposits. Because this material is easily worked, it was often shaped into jewelry and amulets and traded among various European peoples.
It was sacred to the worshippers of the Mother Goddess in classical times because it was believed to contain the essence of life and is often worn by her devotees as it is said to glow like her skin. Today Wiccan highpriestesses wear necklaces consisting of alternating Amber and black Jet.
