Hematite, also spelled haematite, is the mineral form of iron oxyde. It’s a silvery, shiny opaque stone that almost looks like metal. Hematite is a very common mineral, colored black to steel or silver - gray, brown to reddish brown, or red. It’s an opaque mineral with a dull lustre, which has been known as ‘black diamond’. Most hematite is black, but when powdered or fragmented, it can take colors ranging from ochre red to jet black.
The name hematite is derived from the Greek word for blood ‘haima’, so called because of the red color of the powder. When this powder is mixed with water, it looks like blood and sometimes it is still referred to as ‘bloodstone’. The color of hematite lends it well in use as a pigment.
Hematite is said to be a good healing and grounding stone. It strengthens the body and improves resistance to life’s stresses.
Hematite enhances focus, concentration, will - power, reliability, trust, balance and stability. This stone is a typical Capricorn stone and has been traditionally
considered to have a beneficial effect on legal situations.
Strengthens the heart.
