‘Jade’ is a name often used for both jadeite and nephrite. Nephrite is quite similar to Jadeite in its healing abilities, but its colors are creamier and less translucent than jadeite. Nevertheless they differ from one another in their chemical composition.
In the time of Spanish conquests, jadeite was a magical stone of Xiuhetecuhtli, the Aztec god of fire. The conquistadores discovered that the clearly green Chalchihuitl, when carried on the skin, offered them protection against kidney diseases. They named the stone ‘piedra de yjada’, or ‘loin stone’. This immediately says something about the way jade was used : as a cure against kidney ailments. Until now, this is still the case.
Jade was highly prized as a remedy by Egyptian healers. American Indians also use jade to heal all ailments associated with the kidneys as well as to aid in childbirth. Because of its beneficial effect on the kidneys, the stone was also known as ‘lapis nephriticus’. And that is where the term ‘nephrite’ came from.
In prehistoric times, it was esteemed rather more for its toughness and many tools and weapons were made of jade because it’s a rather hard stone that doesn’t break rapidly. Axe heads and other tools of jade have been found in archeological sites throughout the world.
In much old cultures jade has always been highly appreciated, but especially in the east, jade is a very important stone. Throughout Asian history, jade has been the most respected and revered stone in the Orient.
