Larimar

Larimar is a rare sky or sea – blue volcanic variety of pectolite. It was first discovered in 1916, but was first mined in 1974. The only locality where Larimar appears on the terrestrial crust, is the province of Barahona, in the south - western region of the Dominican Republic. The name larimar was made up by Miguel Méndez, a resident of the Dominican Republic by combining his daughters name LARIssa, with MAR, the Spanish word for the sea. The stone of course being a Caribbean sea blue color.
The patterns in the stone - spider web, clouds - are determined by how much water was present in the stone while it was forming. The white is where the water was.
Different sources point out a close connection between Larimar and the legendary continent Atlantis, and by many it is also called ‘Atlantis stone’.
Larimar regularly occurs in books concerning Atlantis. It is said that the Dominican republic was once part of Atlantis.
Larimar has a nourishing, watery energy and activates our self - healing forces.
