Chalcedony : a type of cryptocrystalline quartz, formed not of one single crystal but a number of finely grained microcrystals. The variety of chalcedonies is immense. Some of the best known ones are : agate, moss – agate, onyx, jasper, bloodstone, aventurine, chrysoprase, amethyst, citrine, ametrine, carnelian …

Quartz is silicon oxide. The name ‘quartz’ is derived from the German ‘Quarz’, a word of Slavic origin. Pure quartz is known as ‘rock crystal’.
The Romans believed quartz to be ‘water ice’, permanently frozen after great lengths of time. The word ‘crystal’ – as in rock crystal - comes from the Greek word for ice : ‘krystallos’. This purity and clarity symbolizes mental qualities such as neutrality, openness, eagerness to study and learn, reason, consciousness. If impurities such as iron, titanium or radiation are added, the basical healing properties are altered.
