Tiger’s Eye

Tiger’s eye (also Tigers eye, Tiger eye) is a chatoyant gemstone that is usually gold- to red-brown, with silky lustrous alternating yellow or brown bands. Tiger’s eye is displaying chatoyancy (a vertical luminescent band like that of a cat’s eye). It received its name due to this similarity.

The gems are usually cut en cabochon in order to best display their chatoyancy. The color gives the stone its name: honey colored stones are called ‘Cat’s Eye, grey-blue stones are called ‘Hawk’s Eye’.

In the Middle Ages tiger’s eye was used to ward off the evil eye and witchcraft. Negative influences are returned to the sender and he (or she) will understand that this kind of negativity doesn’t work with the other person and end his malpractice. Tiger’s Eye is said to protect against criminal acts, bad influences and wrong friends. It was thought to be all seeing due to its appearance. A rough piece of tiger’s eye placed at the entrance of a house keeps out negativity.

Tiger’s eye is a beneficial stone for the respirational system. Wear it just above the solar plexus or, in case of acute bronchitis, also during the night. Tiger’s Eye can alleviate headaches and helps in case of migraine caused by stress. It is thought to synthesize the energies of the Sun and Earth. Due to its warm, earthy color, it has the ability to ‘warm’ and helps against depression. Tiger’s eye helps to convert anxiety, fear and obsessiveness into practicality and logic. It is said to increase confidence and promotes clear thinking.
